They aren't contracting and thus aren't being actively used and developed. The abs are doing nothing, since gravity is on their side. The back is merely stabilizing, which doesn't build full muscle strength, only a highly specialized and tiny range of motion with more power.
the calves only stabilize your feet/ankles, and if you have proper body control and balance, they shouldn't be doing much.
Muscles ONLY contract. If it's not pulling two things closer together, it's not doing anything.

my point was that that is only the back, plus it only build strength in an isolated range in that muscles
that's why building biceps you do curls, not jsut hold the dumbell in such a fashion as its 'working out' the muscle

Load up a barbell with as much weight as you can, watch a video for form and just do it. Come back and tell me that your 'abs are doing nothing, because gravity is on their side'.

yes, I've done dead lifts, and no they aren't really doing anything
the most they do is pull your core together if it isn't strong enough on its own

Just droppin by to say that deadlifts do work a bunch, though i don't use them often because I don't know the technique too well.
I am going to start using rippetoes again, I used to before I got sick and lost a lot of weight/muscle. The only problem is the gym for our school is open tuesday/thursday/friday, so I may only be able to lift twice a week.

I'm making really great gains, i've blown past all my old lifts which i had been stalled on for ages using a normal 'body building' routine.
