I recently finished reading 1984...and it really got to me.
Most people actually do love Big Brother...and they don't have a huge problem with it either.
But..had we always loved Big Brother..then would social progress be where it's at today?
Think about the Civil Rights Movement for instance. The blacks were repressed soo hard that they finally fought back..because they were the ones who didn't give into Big Brother's wrath.
And these two situations are fighting in my mind.. Do I want to give up and be happy loving Big Brother or put in a lot of effort, do what I think is right, and fight against him?

First off big brother is another name for the government, more specifically a government which watches and controls your life.
The question your asking is actually do i want to remain a blind sheep, or do I want to embrace truth and freedom? there is always constant between freedom and security. If you have alot of freedom you have a high risk, but if you have alot of security then you have no freedom.
Personally all of life is a risk and the existence of a 'big brother' is in of itself one of the most evil actions ever committed.
and as far as the blacks go thats less big brother and more a cultural prejudice.
And most people enjoy being sheep, making hard decisions is HARD!

government is necessary for law and order, sure they fuck up a lot, but without it, our basic human instincts would kick in, and a power struggle that used to happen back when we were caveman. so it is is necessary to a certain degree. sure, i don't love all the politics involved in government, but without it, power would be distributed much more unevenly than it is now, and influential groups would probably gain the most power. without a sense of unity, us as a species wouldn't move forward as fast as we have. this is of course, my opinion. on the other hand, i agree with prodigy with most people enjoying the perceived safety and comfort brought on by the government. but as my awesome government teacher has told me "the government isn't gonna save your ass" so it's nice to understand the government, but by no means should one be dependent on any entity but one's own self. that's my take. independent thinking is required.

Actually people have functioned without government before and there was no problem. Research the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. Anarchism worked in Spain for 3 years in Spain before the fascists took over. Another great book by George Orwell is "Homage to Catalonia" which are his recorded memoirs of fighting in the Spanish Civil War himself. Anyone interested in politics or war should definitely read it.

Sublime, why do you think the facist 'took over'? Because anarchism wasn't working for the Spaniards.
Big bother doesn't exist to people like us. We will never have to face 'big bother' in our life, unless we become someone of importance. Most likely through the military, and even then, its not big bother that watches you in particular.
So, I really feel like people can't really talk about how we feel, but how we think we feel.
I personally have never been watched by big bother, but I can't say it'll always be that way. I hope so.

dude, big brother is a metaphor, he does not exist. What the name 'big brother' represents is a part of the federal government that keeps tabs on the general public, and thanks to george w. bush there are examples. Such as tapping phone lines, that is a example of big brother in action.
and how can you personally know big brother has never watched you? Have you ever been in a city?
every large city is a veritable panioptica, with cameras and mics and other vaious recorders everywhere, all of which can be accessed by any third party.
but whatever, if you feel that there is no big brother, then there isnt, but I really don't think a public forum is the best place for these kind of discussions.

ahahahahaha prodigy, chillllllll.
but i like to look at big brother as the BS culture that big time corporations are promoting through advertisements and how the BS culture is actually taking over.
and giving in to this culture of complete narcissism and hypocrisy is soooo much easier than trying to live life the way i fantasize it to be.
giving into the bullshit of modern dating is soo much easier.
giving into the "i love myself" persona is soo much easier than trying to do significant good unto others in need.
it sucks. i wish socialism would work in real life as well as it does on paper and imagination. i wish people wouldn't act like the tools from Jersey Shore and think that the romance they see on TV is the way romance is in real life.
and i blame the media and the huge ass corporations, who are my own Big Brothers.
