Actually, I've found that side crunches are really ineffective. Try side either what I said up there ^ (great while watching TV) or side V-sits. The side-V's seem awkward at first but work really well. Just make sure that your lower body is parallel to the floor and that your upper body only rises once you have pulled in your legs. This explanation won't make sense unless you already know what I'm talking about, so if you need a link to a beginner's explanation, just ask and I'll try to find one.

I've done planks before. Our standard plank workout includes sides
There is more burn on crunches, at least for me
