its also probably only 2 years, and you barely even fight anything since your service never develops a strong enough fighting force to actually participate in real military action.

I dislike it on principle. Not because of any logistics.

I'm not joining any of those branches Dream, so I can't really answer your question. But I can tell you the branch I am joining I am joining becuase I want to do something higher than myself. There are many ways of doing something higher than yourself. The same amount of dedication and time the army would take from your life would be the amount of dedication and time you need to do something truly higher than yourself and world-changing. Also, read Michael Herr's Dispatches. It's all about Vietnam, and is considered the best book on the subject. The biggest influence for Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket

Gay, by joining any branch of the army you are supporting every other branch I wouldn't join because even if wars, torture and crime (all things that some branches of the military do) are inevitable, it's not going to happen in MY name. And seriously Kristall, POPULATION CONTROL?
Let me guess. You're dealing with the population explosion not by increasing education and awareness of contraception, but by killing people from the middle east. Well done. You've given one of the worst arguments for the military ever.

JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT KILLING PEOPLE DOESN'T MEAN IT'S OKAY FOR YOUR GOVERNMENT TO TAKE TWO WHOLE YEARS OF YOUR LIFE!

And seriously Kristall, POPULATION CONTROL? War will never cease. So Population control is a positive viewpoint on the matter. The logic doesn't matter, since it can't be changed either way. Might as well look at it as a positive thing.
