“The circumstances don't make the man, they reveal them”
Brad P talked a bit about identity building in The Underground Dating Seminar, and I'd like to elaborate a bit more on what he said because as high schoolers, our identity as people is still in development, meaning we are still trying to “find out” who we are. The reason that I say “find out” is because we aren't really searching for who we are, we're really creating it, from scratch. We all have a clean slate to become whoever we want to be, and Brad P talks about these categories as essential identity builders.
Leadership Roles
Leadership roles are rather obvious, but if we want to learn how to be alpha males, we need to assume the role of a leader. You can do this by starting a club, running for president, planning a night out for your friends, and even being the leader in group projects and discussions. You'll learn how to get people on your side and learn how to get people to perform the delegated tasks that they've been given. It will take some calibration on your part, since “hey you, do this now” usually doesn't get the job done, and no one likes some power hungry dictator giving out orders like hotcakes, but with that said, you'll gain so much more experience than from reading one of the many (kickass) “how to be an alpha male” posts.
Competitive Activities
This one is one of my favorites, I'm a big sports guy, but sports aren't the only competitive activities you can partake in. Things like business, debate club, chess club, checkers, yo momma jokes, rap battles, break dancing, anything that you can challenge someone else in is usually a competitive activity. If you're not sure, ask someone if they'll verse you and see if it makes sense. For example: “I'll verse you in painting” doesn't exactly cut it.
Travel
Ahh travel, my other girlfriend who I always cheat on with my other girlfriend competitive activities. The truth is, I never get to spend time with this one that much, but being in another country/continent like europe, africa, latin america, or whatever, really puts you out of your comfort zone. Brad P talks about being able to spend time alone comfortably really helps build your identity, and from my experience I can definitely vouche for that. But this is about travel, I'll put the alone time last. Well, being introduced to other cultures and the other ways that people live, really helps put things into perspective. There are billions upon billions of people (about a little more than half are girls) living in this world today, so why get caught up in petty little nonsensical things? Things like hunger, poverty and government corruption are going on in the world right now, and you're afraid of some girl who's going to reject you? I'm not being pessimistic, I'm just being real, the U.S. And the media have blinded thee! But this is too much of a rant travel is awesome, never forget it.
Community Service
Now this one, brad p never mentioned.. the selfish bastard but I added this one because this is essentially what “giving value” is on a more profound level. Think about it for a sec..well more than that. Giving without expecting anything back (unless it's volunteer hours for college credit, but I digress) is what the whole principle of “giving value” is based on, and what better way to do that than through community service and volunteer work? Plus, it gives me the warm fuzzies inside
Spending some Alone Time
No, I don't mean with a bottle of lotion and some napkins, I mean being able to comfortably spend time alone, anywhere. Mr. Brad P said, and I summarize “After the backpacking trip alone in europe, where I spent 45 minutes trying figure out a pay phone in switzerland, it really taught me how to rely on myself and my thinking in order to achieve something. Now, you can put me in any country and I'll be able to make friends on the fly. Same with pick up, I've practiced alone so much that you can put me in any social situation and i'll be able to get the girl, I won't even need a house to stay, i'll end up at the girl's house.”
A bit of a bragger, but I promise you, those 6 CD's were one of the best free things in my life...
With that in mind, you gotta learn how to be completely internally validated. Sure it's nice that you're friends and your wing are with you to hold your hand while you learn pick up, but being in a club all by yourself and acting normal and going up to a girl takes a very convicted man who's so sure of himself. Even though this is true, I always go out alone, and I still suck, so don't beat yourself up too much (I do, I still have the bruises to prove it ) It takes a lot of patience and having the right attitude, being able to recontextualize all the bad things that happen.
Alright well, this was written in vegas in my room with a lot of time on my hands, hope you enjoyed it.
