So I'm a Senior in high school and decided to wrestle this year. I don't usually do a winter sport and some of my friends wrestled so I figured hell why not give it a try; it's never too late to start something new. So I was wondering if anyone had any tips for my first match? We've been doing really hard workouts in practice and I've learned some basic technique, but I'm sure it'll be hard to focus on technique my first match.

I joined in eighth, now a frosh. I love it. For your first match, (as I did in my first few matches), try not to get pinned, and last 3 periods. After you can last, work on actually doing something. It's likely if he's any good, he'll shoot in immediately, and probably pick up a double, high crotch, something big and easy, and then look for a pin. I say this; stay on the defense. Sprawl out. If you stand, handfighting like idiots, shoot in, take a double. It's better to lose knowing you tried than just get taken down and pinned in like 6 seconds.

^ no, if hes good he'll set up the shot. You should be in shape, so lasting shouldnt be that much of an issue - if ur not in shape GET in shape. Wrestling is 50% skill 50% mind set. Go in thinking you will win and give it your all. Work on wrist control and getting out on bottom, DRILL DRILL DRILL. You need to set up the shot, just dont go in with out setting it up that wont work

if its freestyle wrestling it would help if u had some backgroung knowledge in brazilian jiu jitsu if not u can look up some basic moves on youtube, like positional escapes and a few armlocks thats should get u through your first few matches and then u can build on your ground game

Not necessarily, I've been doing bjj for a few years now and just started wrestling this past year. Skill in bjj doesn't really translate well into wrestling; and I'm pretty sure joint manipulation like armlocks is illegal in high school wrestling. However, knowing some kind of ground game usually means you'll pick up techniques at a quicker pace than without...my advice is to condition, condition, condition.

^ so true honestly highschool wrestling and bjj are complete opposites. You cant use chokes or anything that can break something. Except probably "the bannana split"- most painful move to get into. But wrestling is great to be in shape and stay in shape.

I really like Wrestling, I think that If the Olympic Games are a history of mankind, wrestling is the prologue. Wrestling is one of the oldest of martial arts, The wrestlers wear swimsuits rather than special wrestling uniforms. I hope that many people will really like wrestling, and really enjoy this.
