SHOES. The NUMBER ONE thing you can use to your advantage in looks.
1). Choosing the right shoes:
Choose shoes that fit you. #1 thing is to be comfortable in them. If you want to see what's modern right now, check out some shops in your town (good brands of course). You can follow the trend but be sure to stick out in some way. Just go out and find something nice.
Color (yep, my Firefox is US version, when I type colour it shows it as an error, not in dictionary) of the shoes; Black, white, darker colors in general. Nothing too flashy (I saw a guy with yellow sneakers. To himself he probably looked good, but I saw him as gay). Make the design stick out, not the color. Again, anything nice will do. Because
2) How do you treat your shoes
is what really matters. As a rule of thumb, they should look like they're brand new (there are some exceptions, 4xmpl Doc Marten's). So POLISH them every now and then, brush them, wash them. Not in a washing machine but by sponge and hot water. For black shoes, use black polish. For brown shoes brown one. -> except if the material doesn't allow it. For every other colour use the "neutral" shoe polish. Ask in the shop if you're in doubt, the clerk will help you.
3) When to wear them
is pretty important too. In general, wear them to occasion they were made for (tennis shoes for tennis, runner shoes for running, etc) but don't be afraid to overdo a bit. Match them with your clothing and style. And keep them clean.
