What do you recommend? I want something in the mid-section (by price - less than 1000 bucks). I play metal (heavy and trash) and hard rock. I also love ballads, so I need something with great clean tone - neck pickup. First I considered Epiphone SG, but they are copies of Gibson and I 1) want something original 2) have bad experience with copies.
I've been considering Ibanez, especially the RG series.
Oh and no Fenders, please. To get the one that sounds really good, I don't have enough money (I've played the Mexican Strat and it sux).
Opinions anyone?

Ibanez are pretty good with metal and you can get the clean sound too.
Dean guitars are really good for metal but youd be hard pressed to get the clean ballad sound.
Id go with the ibanez.

The Paul Reed Smith Custom SE imo is the best mid-range guitar you can get. It plays as well as some higher end guitars and if you want that metal sound, get a Peevey amp or one that is made for metal because honestly the amp you're playing out of affects you're sound more than the guitar itself.

I managed to get a Gibson SG for only $600, look around, it may have been a limited edition though.

Go for dense Mahogany body built, gold pick ups, rose (the dark) wood for the fret. You can just adjust string sizes for the tone you want. I say get a Gonez.

I've played some PRS's and i was severly dissapointed unless you went with $1000+ The expensive ones are amazing but the mid-lower end ones really suck. I would go with an Ibanez or even a Epiphone Les Paul. And yea they are coppies but 1) who gives a fuck if you are origional w/ the guitar you play. Its about what you do with it not what it lookes like. 2) They are better coppies than you think, Gibson and Epiphone are sister companies (or gibson ownes epiphone i forget which). The SG isn't the best for ballads or metal in my opinion though, they are better for heavier blues.

Really? idk when I was looking for a guitar I played an Epiphone Les Paul and I found it to be really stiff. My friend also has a Gibson SG Faded, and I like my PRS better, but I guess it all just comes down to going to a store, playing a variety of guitars, and buying whichever one you like the best.

It sounds like you'd want an Ibanez. I'm having a great time with my JEM 7V (the Steve Vai signature), but those are far above $1000. If you can afford it, go for an expensive one now instead of buying several cheap ones along the way to buying that same expensive one later on. Just make sure you keep it safe.
An RG sounds like your type of guitar: They have what you're looking for in terms of sound, and I doubt you'd be dissatisfied with one in terms of quality.ß

I'd love the Steve Vai signature.... man I love that sound. He has by far the best music production (he does it himself). Really, he in MP3 sounds better than most bands in high-quality (find "Bad Horsie" and "Tender surrender" on youtube for proof). Too bad I can't afford the guitar.
I was thinking....Washburn? Waddaya say guys?

Well, my folks are out of money. The crisis has came to Croatia (and Czech Republic too). So I guess that no guitar until easter at least.
About the guitar - I've decided what I want in guitar and I'll go to shop and try it. It is: Humbucker pickups with separate volume knobs Floyd Rose tremolo (the strings are killing me) strap locks (although this is optional, since it can be re-fitted) not too heavy, not too light and basically something that fits me. You know, when you play couple of guitars and some of them just "fits" and others do not. I'll try to find the one that "fits" and has what I need. I'll see what they have in the store.

The best strap locks I've used are simple washers. The purchased ones fall frequently and fuck shit up when I guitar spin. The washers, NEVER failed me. And they're really cheap. You can probably find a couple in your garage tool box.
