Well I used to be really fat. Then I lost 50 lbs. 2 years later and I would still consider myself what I like to call "skinny fat". I've been lifting for the past 4 months and have seen reasonable muscle/strength gains, but I was wondering if it would be wise to supplement with either whey protein or creatine as I am still not satisfied with my current body image. Does this sound like a good idea, and if so, which would you recommend? Whey protein or creatine?

Creatine will just make your muscles look bloated if your not very muscular, but I find it helps my lifts. Make sure to drink a ton of water.
Whey protein helps a ton though. Eat a ton of peanut butter to put on mass, its been working for me

Roll with eating more and supplementing with whey.

Creatine is awesome. Whey isn't actually needed but is useful

I haven't heard anything bad yet about whey, but I have heard that creatine can make you fat. Is there any truth to this?

I haven't heard anything bad yet about whey, but I have heard that creatine can make you fat. Is there any truth to this? From what I know it makes you gain like 7kgs in water weight when you start out, but from there it helps you lift a bit more by storing more creatine in your muscles and also making you look bigger (and possibly more bloated) by increasing water retention in your muscles.

This isn't true. You gain a little water weight, like a kilo or two, and the rest is muscle. I didn't bloat at all, and no one should because this isn't subcutaneous water retention. Seriously though, it dwarves any other legal supplement in terms of gains in both strength and actual muscle size. It spawned the supplement industry and they've all been searching for the "next creatine" since.

Might have to check it out then. Isn't creatine rather expensive though?

if you take too much creatine for too long though, your body can stop producing it naturally completely, so you may become dependent on topping up with the tablets for the rest of your life. you don't want that. most recommend taking 1 week off every 8 weeks. But I've still seen gains from it by only taking half the recommended dose and taking 1 week off from every four (3 weeks on, 1 week off) so just bare that in mind when chugging the pills

I put on about 5 pounds of water weight when I cycle creatine in, and add 5-10 pounds to most of my lifts. I just have more energy as long as I drink a ton of water.
Sidenote, I get hangovers when on creatine even though I usually don't when I'm not. Anyone else have this issue?

^yes. Creatine dehydrates you and a hangover is just dehydration. Since the creatine makes it easier to dehydrate you get hangovers easy.
